Projekttitel: Did the 20th century world wars impede or foster trade and innovation in Sweden, 1900-1965
Projektbeskrivning: THE AIM AND SCOPE OF THE PROJECT: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the impact of international external shocks, such as wars, revolutions, and crises, on economic growth and development in the 20th century. One of the main reasons for this has been the use of digitized databases, which has encouraged new approaches and techniques and allowed new empirical evidence and challenging theories to come to the fore. The research has focused mainly on large trading nations, but also on small industrializing countries such as Sweden.

Projekttitel: The power of the promissory organization
Projektbeskrivning: THE RESEARCH PROBLEM It is called the greatest industrial investment in Swedish history, the ‘green’ revolution in ‘the land of the future’ (Sörlin 2023). Fantasy amounts will be invested in hydrogen iron- and steelmaking in Norrbotten, an extreme makeover of a technological mega-system built at the dawn of the 20th century. Estimates reveal that the investments demand additional electricity equivalent to more than half of Sweden’s annual production.

Projekttitel: The interplay between sustainability reporting and management accounting practices: empirical exploration of firms’ early CSRD adoption
Projektbeskrivning: RESEARCH MOTIVATION AND AIMS The EU, with its ambitious political goals of a sustainable Europe, has implemented the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in the hope of changing firm practices towards sustainable development (European Commission, n.d.). From 2024, firms in the EU are mandated to identify and report on significant environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects and describe their impacts, risks, and opportunities (i.e., IROs) in the entire value chain. To successfully comply with CSRD, firms must consider how their value chain influences (inside-out perspective) and is influenced by (outside-in perspective) sustainability factors using the double materiality analysis (Swedish Financial Reporting Board, 2023).

Projekttitel: Illegal Trade during War: Examples from the High North Atlantic, 1760-1820
Projektbeskrivning: Purpose, Aims, and Research Questions In his seminal work on economic history, Eli Heckscher emphasised the important role of smuggling in Europe during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, particularly in times of war (Heckscher 1918). He added, however, that it is most difficult for historians to assess the scale and impact of this trade. By examining previously overlooked sources, this project aims to explore the creation and repercussions of illegal trade during times of upheaval.

Projektbeskrivning: Background In the recently completed project "Welfare professions in the shadow of the pandemic", we identified a number of interesting examples of how the pandemic, in many respects, meant that some welfare professions and professional groups experienced a clear increase in self-determination and confidence in their profession. Professional commitment, a sense of doing something significant, professional pride, and work-related self-confidence seemed to develop at the same pace as COVID-19 swept through their workplace. Despite the great strain that the management of the pandemic placed on welfare workers' work situation and working conditions, many testified that their work-related well-being (somewhat paradoxically) did not only develop negatively.

Projekttitel: Alternative food networks: craft-orientation and sustainable production and consumption of food
Projektbeskrivning: Dear stiftelse, In this application our productive research team turns to a new topic: craft-based food networks. In our previous projects, financed by HB, we focused on the role of branding in city contexts, so far resulting in five journal publications, two book chapters in research anthologies (see Jens’ CV), and another journal article and a book in progress. In this application, we expand upon our studies of city branding by including how craft and food are common elements in cities’ attempts to brand themselves as attractive and sustainable.

Projekttitel: Ascertaining motivations for historical trade policy using topic modelling
Projektbeskrivning: Research motivation Protectionism is experiencing a resurgence in the global economy. After more than half a century of liberalisation efforts and the widespread adoption of globalisation, recent years have witnessed a notable shift towards protectionist policies in international trade (Fajgelbaum et al., 2020). Tariffs have become central to this protectionist backlash, exemplified by significant events such as the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union and the United States-China trade war (Amiti et al., 2019; Dhingra & Sampson, 2022).

Several academic studies (Kaplan and Strömberg, 2009; Sorensen and Yasuda, 2023) have shown that PE is associated with increases in productivity and growth in companies, contributing to economic growth, job creation and innovation in the economy as a whole (Bernstein et al, 2017).

Projekttitel: Mapping Social Stratification in the Making of Modern Argentina, 1850–1900: a Micro-Level Analysis
Projektbeskrivning: RESEARCH MOTIVATION AND AIMS The issue of social stratification has regained prominence in academic and political discourse (Piketty, 2020), with the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting the disproportionate social and economic costs bore by marginalized groups (Kamande et al., 2024). Such resurgence has extended to the Global South, historically marked by high inequality and low socio-economic development, to uncover the root causes of inequality and foster sustained growth (Alvaredo et al., 2021; De Rosa et al., 2024). However, most of this research is hampered by substantive and methodological challenges, including lack of robust data on key variables, described by Williamson (2009) as “history without evidence”, which limit the depth and accuracy of analyses on socio-economic and structural inequalities in historical perspective.

Projekttitel: COLLEGIALITY FOR INTEGRITY AND QUALITY
How and why do scholars engage in collegial governance?
Projektbeskrivning: Challenges to collegiality Recent changes to university systems, debates on academic freedom, and changing roles of knowledge in society all point to questions regarding how higher education and research should be governed. Universities around the world have been subject to changed governance and organization according to widely spread bureaucratic and enterprise (often also termed as managerial) ideas and ideals (Parker & Jary, 1995; Marginson & Considine, 2000; Tuchman, 2009; Musselin, 2018; Czarniawska, 2019; Fleming, 2020). University reforms, of the kind referred to above, have challenged a long-standing agreement that universities ought to be governed as a collegium of peers (Sahlin & Eriksson-Zetterquist, 2023).

Projekttitel: The Potential and Limitations of Craft as an Economic and Social Transformative Force
Projektbeskrivning: In our ongoing research project (P22-0095) we explore the contributions of craft to social and ecological sustainability. During 2023 and 2024 we collected extensive empirical material in food and fashion craft domains and contributed empirical and conceptual insights to the scholarly debate on craft by analyzing (i) the motivation of building a craft career (Egan-Wyer, Rennstam, Schaefer and Schneider, paper presented at the 2024 meeting of the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS) and currently under review); (ii) possibilities of de-alienation inherent in craft work (Schaefer & Schneider, paper presented at Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting 2024 and currently under review), (iii) craft as an intimate relation to the community (published, Schaefer & Paulsson, 2024), and (iv) craft as a practice embodying postgrowth ideals (Rennstam & Paulsson, 2024, published). While we can show that craft is meaningful to craftworkers and local communities and can provide important inspiration for a more sustainable society, our empirical and conceptual work has raised further critical questions.

Projekttitel: The Influence of Artificial Intelligence on Accounting Education: A comparative study between Mexico and Sweden
Projektbeskrivning: Background Recent literature on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in accounting education has revealed a growing emphasis on machine learning algorithms and large language models (LLMs) as tools to improve auditing students’ scepticism and critical thinking. Studies demonstrate that these technologies accelerate data analysis, enhance anomaly detection, and enrich learners’ ability to question conventional assumptions in financial reporting (Han et al., 2023). These developments are relevant because they address the surging complexity of modern audits, where professionals are expected to sift through extensive datasets and detect subtle irregularities.

Research problem and question In the constant pursuit of sustainability, we encounter the challenge of distinguishing genuine environmental efforts made by corporations from those that are only seemingly green.

Projekttitel: Configuring Management Control Systems for Resilience: Exploring Social Services and Primary Care During War
Projektbeskrivning: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The ongoing war in Ukraine has highlighted the critical need for resilience and preparedness in essential services such as social services and primary care (Obłój & Voronovska, 2024; Opatska et al., 2024). Armed conflicts disrupt societal stability, jeopardizing the continuity of essential services that form the backbone of civilian well-being (Quinn & Jackson, 2014). Unlike financial crises or natural disasters, which are often localized or time-bound, war creates prolonged and unpredictable conditions that continuously challenge the operational readiness of critical service providers (Folkers, 2017).

This is particularly critical for Swedish firms which rely heavily on international markets. Recent developments — e.g., the US “CHIPS and Science Act,” the EU’s evolving export control regimes, and persistent Sino-US trade tensions — underscore how swiftly geopolitical frictions can disrupt trade routes, critical technology flows, and access to strategic resources.

Projekttitel: ciRculaR RetaileRs: Shifting to sustainable consumption through Rent, Redistribute, Repair, and Remanufacture strategies
Projektbeskrivning: INTRODUCTION There are various approaches to overcoming environmental problems and encouraging businesses to produce long-lasting, circular products, infuse more resource-efficient business models, and reduce waste. For example, the Right to Repair directive adopted by the EU Commission in 2024 will oblige Swedish manufacturers and retailers in 2026 to provide access to spare parts and tools for consumers to repair their products even after the guarantee expires (Choe et al., 2023; EU Commission, 2024). Thus, these businesses have no choice but to integrate a circular perspective in their operations, such as through reusing and retaining products already existing in the marketplace (Eckhardt et al., 2019; Godfrey et al., 2022; Huang & Wong, 2024).

This is a window of rare opportunity to study how a standard is interpreted, adhered to and integrated into organizational activities and financial objectives to bring sustainability impact. Sustainability reporting has become an increasingly common practice as organizations endeavor to meet the expectations and demands of stakeholders, who seek accountability for the social and environmental impacts of organizations’ global activities.

Projekttitel: The new economy of evidence: The reorganization of expertise in journalism and justice
Projektbeskrivning: Introduction Everyday more than 3,2 billion images and 720,000 videos are shared on social media (Thomson, Angus and Dootson, 2020); over 20.000 satellites are orbiting in space as of 2024 (UNOOSA, 2024), many of them generating millions of pictures of space and the earth every day; more than 4,5 million videos are watched on Youtube every minute (Domo, 2019) and more than 250 million images are indexed on Google. This hyper-production and circulation of images together with the availability of generative algorithms that produce perfectly credible images have been arguably challenging the documentary value of images and produces a significant number of evidence struggles in the public sphere. In numerous professional domains, like journalism and justice, the preoccupation with the establishment of facts has caused a number of professional responses to reaffirm epistemic practices of evidence making.

Projekttitel: Market Order and Stability Beyond the State. Illegal Enterprise and State Enforcement Strategies in Swedish Drug Markets.
Projektbeskrivning: Aims Recent evidence indicates that an increase in the availability of illegal drugs and shifts in the methods of drug distribution in the last decade have generated both elevated levels of criminal conflict and new patterns of organization in illicit drug markets in Sweden (BRÅ 2021). While drug-related violence in criminal settings has attracted extensive research attention, e.g., in the rise in firearms-related lethal violence (Gerell et al 2021; Magnusson 2023), we currently know much less about the new patterns of drug market organization that have been observed and even less about the effects of these patterns on drug market persistence and resilience. This is surprising given that the organization of crime groups may have a substantial impact on drug market resilience (Ayling 2009; Bouchard 2007; Pereda & Décary-Hetu 2024).

Projekttitel: From Cobden–Chevalier to Ådalen: trade, regional growth and social conflict in Sweden (1860–1938)
Projektbeskrivning: [Project description and purpose] The second half of the nineteenth century up until the outbreak of the Second World War represents a period of economic, social and political transformations. These transformations are closely linked to the unprecedented expansion of long-distance trade and integration of global markets for goods and labour, known as the First Globalization, as well as the collapse of world trade in the interwar years as a result of the Great Depression. Scholars have devoted much attention to how the rise and fall of global trade impacts national economies and inequality among their citizens both today and in the past (Piketty 2014¸ Milanovic 2016).

Projekttitel: Creating value of hazardous waste: recycling in the automobile industry, 1970-2020s
Projektbeskrivning: 1.0 Swedish Recycling Industry While reuse and recycling have always been part of human practice, post-war consumerism, which embodied everything from household appliances and automobiles to various disposable goods and packaging, led to an unprecedented increase in the volume of waste. Sweden was no exception. The rise in consumption, coupled with the strong growth of manufacturing industries, made Sweden one of the leading per capita waste producers in Europe in the 1970s.
