There is a growing concern that men are falling behind women in various aspects. Women dominate higher education, and boys continue to perform worse than girls in school, especially those with parents who lack higher education. This project studies the importance of sibling spillovers, from sisters to brothers, for boys’ educational and economic outcomes, exploiting quasi-experimental variation in sibling-sex composition and the older sibling’s education. By better understanding the importance of role models (in the family) and norms, we can devise targeted interventions during boys’ early schooling to compensate for the possible lack of family drivers towards higher education and earnings.
