Innovation is key to economic development, yet we lack a clear understanding of the causes of new ideas. Exploiting an archive of over 100 000 unstudied historical Swedish patents, we will examine the importance of financial development and trade as drivers of innovation in early 20th century Sweden when Sweden was transformed from a developing to a developed country.
